Description

Week 4 of my 52 Weeks of Art | 10" x 10" | Philae is a 6-ton, dishwasher sized lander that travelled a cumulative distance of over 6.4 billion miles with it's mother craft Rosetta. It's destination was the comet P67 and it was the first mission to ever orbit and land on a comet. The journey took over 10 years and required gravity assists from several planets to give it the extra boost that it's solar panels and batteries couldn't provide. It reached the comet in November (2014) and had quite the landing, bouncing off of the comet before settling down in a crevice. Due to it's awkward landing it was only able to transmit a few pictures and minimal data before powering down. It is now in hibernation, patiently waiting till the comet passes closer to the sun - where it will attempt to charge it's batteries via solar panels. This is expected to happen May/June of this year and I hope everything works out. It truly is a wonder of science and immensely captivating. For me anyways ;).

Also, in this painting, amongst the stars are a few tiny specks of gold that I got in New Zealand on a panning tour.
